Laser eye surgery has come a long way since Dr Mark Medownick performed the first laser vision correction in Australia for long-sightedness in 1994. Since then, Medownick Laser Clinic, has been committed to using only the highest quality lasers to achieve outstanding results for our patients.
In November 2019, Medownick Laser Eye Clinic unveiled an expansion of its world-clase laser eye clinic at Epworth Medical Centre, which includes the acquisition of a special limited-edition Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser, the first of its kind in Australia.
New robotic technology: the future is the limited edition Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser
The Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser allows our surgeons to perform robotic eye laser surgery without the need for any instruments or contact with the eye, with the exception of a small device that keeps your eyelids apart. It’s a breakthrough innovation with many benefits for our patients, including a gentler and more comfortable procedure, and the most sophisticated tracking eye technology available anywhere in the world.
Robotic laser eye surgery means greater accuracy, faster treatment and recovery and better outcomes for patients because it is minimally invasive. It also means less stress on you as a patient. As a result, Dr Medownick believes that the robotic laser eye surgery used at Medownick will supersede the need for Lasik surgery all together. It also allows us to treat presbyopia in ageing eyes.
We are very excited about this new advancement in technology and what it means for our patients. If you have been letting fear get in the way of making an appointment, now is the right time.
Your eyes are unique, and the Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser allows us to customise, with absolute precision and accuracy, to your exact prescription and cornea. The laser uses Wavefront Optimized™ technology, which considers the unique curvature and biomechanics of the eye, preserving quality of vision and addressing the spherical distortions that can induce glare and night vision reduction.
Is laser eye surgery safe?
One of the most common questions we get asked is whether laser eye surgery is safe. With the Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser, the answer is yes. This laser offers unmatched speed, precision and safety for laser eye surgery, and also brings together the most advanced technology in existence.
The main benefit of the Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser when compared to other laser systems is that it encompasses the most sophisticated eye-tracking technology available anywhere in the world. It is tracks and compensates for eye movements with unprecedented precision. Sampling the eye 1,050 times every second, the laser tracks and compensates every eye movement in seven dimensions (including time), so every laser pulse will be precisely placed. As a result, you should feel more secure during your treatment.
This technology uses an ultra-thin laser pulse of 0.5mm to sculpt the corneal surface of the eye with the utmost accuracy and unmatched speed, making it the one of the safest, most effective Excimer Lasers currently available.
Wavefront Optimized™ technology
One of the most innovative features of the Schwind 1050RSL Excimer Laser is the way it uses wavefront-optimised technology to automatically compensate for the imperfections of the eye as a whole system.
We can analyse your eye from 45,000 data points, ensuring the treatment you receive is best suited to your individual requirements – we often liken the procedure to a 3D fingerprint. Depending on the results of your assessment, treatments can be planned purely on your spectacle prescription; alternatively, because every eye is unique, treatments can also be planned from aberration data measured on either the corneal surface or the entire optical system of your eye. Some other laser systems may offer one of these options, but not both.
In earlier laser correction systems, the ‘optical zone’, or area of correction, was centred on the front of the cornea. This resulted in a flattened circular area that ended with an abrupt edge, causing unwanted side effects such as poor night vision, glare and halos.
The limited-edition Schwind 1050RSL changes all that. The laser sends extra pulses to the peripheral corneal area in order to compensate for the angle of the laser beam, producing a smooth, effective optical zone for better than 20/20 vision.
Laser eye surgery is an investment in you. It’s why we offer interest-free payment plans over six, 12 or 18 months to suitable candidates.
