The purpose of this section is to introduce you to Dr. Mark Medownick, the founder of our Clinic, and the doctor who performs laser eye surgery or Laser Vision Correction.

Dr. Mark Medownick is one of Australia’s recognised leaders in Laser Vision Correction. He spent twelve years in full-time medical study at Melbourne University, including three years study in Ophthalmology, an intense scientific study of the eye.

During this time, he was active in the Corneal Diseases Unit at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, where he shares responsibility for the introduction of Specular Microscopy into Australia, a technique developed to study the inner layer of the cornea.

Before entering practice, Dr. Medownick spent a further year in the United States as Research Fellow to Professor Miles Galin M.D., of the New York Medical College. Professor Galin was one of the pioneers responsible for the introduction of intraocular lens implants that are most commonly used to replace cataracts. As recognition of his work, Professor Galin was one of the early founding Presidents of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Medownick also worked with Professor Stephen Obstbaum M.D., who was later elected to the Presidency of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Professor Obstbaum was President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1997-1998, recognised as the world’s leading Ophthalmic professional organisation.

On return to Australia, Dr. Medownick founded the Epworth Eye Centre in 1984 with an idea to provide excellence in Ophthalmology in private practice in Melbourne.

He worked closely with Epworth Hospital which was already established as a world-leading tertiary health care institution, modelled on the famous American Mayo Clinic.

Always an innovator, Dr. Medownick has been at the leading edge of new surgical technology in his field. He is constantly evaluating and introducing new curative techniques that have the potential to decrease surgical intrusion into the eye, minimise risk, reduce discomfort and pain for his patients. These techniques provide better results in the interests of his patients.

Dr. Medownick was the first eye surgeon to introduce a Yag Laser unit into a private clinic in Victoria. He was also one of the local pioneers of Small Incision Sutureless Cataract and Implant Surgery using a technique known as Phako Emulsification. He also was one of the first to perform the new technique of Clear Corneal, Sutureless Cataract Surgery. We refer to this new procedure as Low Stress Cataract™ Surgery.

Dr. Medownick has invested his surgical skills in refractive surgery. From the early 1980s, he was one of the few surgeons conducting Radial Keratotomy vision correction, on a regular basis.

Before the advent of Excimer Lasers, this was the only surgical treatment available to correct myopia and astigmatism. Thanks to this early experience Dr Medownick has enormous knowledge of the Refractive Surgery field and a truly remarkable understanding of the Refractive Surgery patient’s needs.

It was this commitment to vision correction, and his vast experience in this field, that naturally led him to evaluate Excimer Laser Vision Correction.

After travelling the world to study developments in laser refractive surgery, he noted the shortcomings of some of the early generations of lasers. With his commitment to patient comfort and successful results, Dr. Medownick made the decision to acquire the first of the third generation Excimer Lasers in the southern hemisphere. Dr Medownick was the first eye surgeon in Australia to perform Laser Vision Correction for Long-sightedness. Consequently, he was invited to present the results to his peers at the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists.

In Germany, he witnessed for himself the results achieved with the German built SCHWIND Keratom Laser by Professor Theo Seiler on his own patients. Professor Seiler was responsible for performing the first ever Excimer Laser Vision Correction, and remains one of the recognised leaders in the field of Excimer Laser Eye Surgery.

The great advantage of the SCHWIND Keratom Laser was that it was the first laser with upgradeable software and hardware. This meant that as each new advance in laser vision technology occured, it could be quickly and easily incorporated into Dr. Medownick’s laser, a factor that was very much in the interests of his patients.

Now we use another German built laser, the  ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q. We obtain very accurate results with this Excimer Laser. With a repetition rate of 400 Hz and a very small flying spot size of 0.8 mm, our laser provides ideal conditions for highly precise laser eye surgery treatments. The ultra fast eye tracker follows eye movements within the world’s shortest reaction time of only a few milliseconds. Our Laser is the newest and the fastest Excimer Laser in Melbourne, Victoria.

With the advent of LASIK, Dr. Medownick was the first in Victoria to introduce the French Moria Evolution Microkeratome, unique for the precision of its Flaps.

Dr Medownick was the first laser eye surgeon in Victoria to perform ALSA Laser procedure on a regular basis. He also was the first in Australia and one of the first in the world to use Advanced Laser Surface (ALSA or PRK) Treatments to improve the clarity of vision after LASIK procedures.  Many Laser Eye Surgeons in Australia followed him in the use of this technique. He was invited by leading American surgeons to collaborate on this technique: using PRK to improve vision after Lasik procedure.  These results were presented on major American and European Cataract and Refractive Surgery meetings.

As a practising doctor, Dr. Medownick has now spent 25 years performing advanced refractive eye surgery, including many thousands of successful Laser Vision Corrections.

Dr Medownick pioneered the Low Stress ReFocus procedure to free people from multi-focal glasses. Medownick Laser Clinic was the first Clinic to do it on regular basis. We also were the first Clinic to help people with high degrees of Myopia or Hypermetropia by using the Artisan Lens – an implantable contact lens.

At Medownick Laser Clinic, Dr. Medownick has gathered together an impressive team of highly skilled and caring Specialist Eye Doctors, Medical Professionals, Clinical Optometrists, qualified Nurses, Patient Counsellors, plus Technical and Support staff. All share one common aim: To provide Medownick patients with the maximum potential eyesight that is medically possible, while ensuring minimal discomfort and inconvenience.

While much of modern laser eye surgery relies on advanced technology as well as surgeon-dependent skills, one traditional quality of medicine remains:  the importance of developing a personalised relationship with each patient, based on mutual trust, and our ability to help patients make informed decisions.

At Medownick, we are committed to one-on-one personalised treatment to the highest ethical standards of professional medical care .Each patient is privately counselled and thoroughly evaluated before any commitment is made to laser vision correction treatment. We may even have to advise against laser eye surgery for your eyes, as we do with approximately a third of Laser Vision Correction applicants.

Once you’ve had an eye operation, we provide you with a 24-hour Emergency Line, to ensure you receive personal and medical support at any time you need it.  We shall be with you all the way. We call it the  Medownick Care Policy.

On a more personal note, Dr. Mark Medownick has always been achievement-oriented.
